Technology can change the conditions of mental-health treatment

HL only

Technology is part of a treatment mechanism when it changes what a patient can experience, practise or monitor. It is not itself evidence that a treatment works: the exposure, outcome and comparison must be specified.

Virtual-reality exposure therapy (VRET) can recreate a feared setting in a controlled environment, allowing gradual confrontation with support. Standardised sessions may improve consistency, while cost, training and access affect whether a promising treatment can be delivered widely.

Rothbaum et al.’s single combat-veteran case reported lower PTSD symptoms after fourteen VRET sessions and follow-ups. The sustained change is useful clinical evidence, but the one participant and tailored context limit generalisation to other disorders or populations.

A positive case study does not prove universal effectiveness or replace ethical clinical assessment. Separate mechanism, outcome measurement, alternative explanations and transferability before recommending a technology.

Technology changes developmental experience and how models are tested

HL only

Technology can influence development of self and attachment by changing feedback, social comparison, caregiver contact and opportunities for exploration. Artificial-intelligence models can simulate or classify developmental patterns, but a computational fit is a test of specified predictions rather than a copy of a developing child.

A platform may supply identity communities and responsive contact, or expose a child to quantified approval, exclusion and surveillance. Video contact can maintain a relationship across distance but does not reproduce touch, shared routines or caregiver availability. Effects depend on age, activity, relationship quality, access and offline context.

Researchers might train an AI model on children's task responses to compare gradual learning with stage-like transitions. Success on held-out data supports predictive value under those conditions; biased training samples, opaque features or shortcut learning can make the model inaccurate for other cultures or tasks and cannot establish the psychological mechanism by itself.

Screen time is not a developmental mechanism, AI accuracy is not proof of human-like cognition, and online contact is not automatically secure attachment. Define the activity and outcome, compare plausible pathways, protect child data and avoid replacing developmental or relationship evidence with a technology label.

Social media can support acculturation and spread misinformation

HL only

Acculturation is the process of adapting while living with more than one cultural system. Technology can support this process by providing language-specific information, contact and community, but it can also reinforce separation or transmit unreliable claims.

Trust, language and cultural fit determine whether a platform functions as a bridge. A researcher should distinguish access to information from successful integration and check whether the content is understood, credible and acted upon.

A review of migrant and ethnic-minority social-media use during COVID-19 found platforms such as WhatsApp and WeChat were important sources when trusted information was unavailable in a person’s first language. The same channels could also amplify vaccine misinformation.

Social media is not automatically a lifeline or a cause of acculturative stress. Avoid an imposed-etic interpretation, specify the group and platform, and separate association from evidence that technology changed acculturation.

Technology can also change interpersonal and group behaviour: persistent messaging may support closeness but remove non-verbal cues and amplify misunderstanding; visible likes, recommendations and group norms can reward conformity or polarize attention. Investigate the specific platform feature, relationship or identity mechanism and offline outcome, because time online alone cannot distinguish connection, group influence and acculturation.

Technology changes cognition by redistributing attention and memory

HL only

Technology can affect cognition by changing the information available, the attention required and where information is stored. A cognitive claim must identify the process—such as recall, multitasking or problem solving—and the conditions under which it changes.

A game may demand rapid monitoring and feedback, whereas constant notifications divide attention. Search engines can make information retrieval faster but may encourage people to remember where to find a fact instead of the fact itself.

These mechanisms can be useful in one task and costly in another: external memory supports complex work, but a learner who never practises retrieval may perform poorly without the device. Compare matched tasks and delayed outcomes before claiming developmental improvement.

Technology is not a single exposure and a task difference is not proof of a general intelligence effect. Specify the tool, duration, comparison and cognitive process; control prior ability and usage; and test whether any gain or cost transfers beyond the practised setting.
