Motivation affects health behaviour through reasons and feedback

HL only

Motivation is the set of processes that starts, directs and sustains behaviour. In health, the useful question is what makes a person begin a behaviour and continue it when the immediate reward is weak or the cost is high.

Intrinsic motivation comes from interest or value in the activity itself; extrinsic motivation depends on an external reward or consequence. Rewards can support an action, but making a valued activity feel transactional can weaken autonomous commitment.

A smoking-cessation plan might combine a personally meaningful health goal with a short-term reward for each smoke-free week. The reward can help start the behaviour, while autonomy, confidence and feedback determine whether it lasts after the reward stops.

There is no single ‘best’ motivator. A reward may increase the target behaviour without changing the underlying reason, and a short study cannot prove lasting health change. State the behaviour, mechanism, time scale and population before generalising.

Self-determination theory predicts more durable health behaviour when autonomy, competence and relatedness are supported: the person has meaningful choice, can see achievable progress and feels supported rather than controlled. A prevention or treatment programme can offer options, graded goals and informative feedback; evaluate initiation, adherence and maintenance after incentives end rather than counting enrolment alone.

Praise motivates development when it reinforces useful effort

Praise is a positive response to an act or achievement and can function as positive reinforcement when it makes the behaviour more likely to recur. Its developmental effect depends on what the praise communicates about the learner and the task.

Praise for effort can support a belief that strategies and practice are improvable; praise for fixed performance can make ability seem scarce and make setbacks threatening. Sincere, specific feedback is more informative than giving identical approval to everyone.

A child whose sponge cake fails can still be praised for testing a recipe and revising the method. That feedback supports persistence and a process-focused self-schema; praise for being ‘naturally talented’ would not teach what to do next.

Praise is not automatically motivating and moderation has no universal threshold. Age, culture, relationship and credibility matter; distinguish a short-term performance increase from durable self-esteem, learning or development.

From self-determination theory, feedback is more likely to support development when it builds competence while preserving autonomy and relatedness. Adults can acknowledge the child's perspective, offer bounded choices and give process information rather than using praise as surveillance or control. Evaluate whether the child later chooses the prosocial or learning behaviour without the reward, not only immediate compliance.

Motivation changes group and work behaviour through needs, goals and feedback

Motivation is the process that gives behaviour direction, effort and persistence. Self-determination theory predicts higher-quality motivation when autonomy, competence and relatedness are supported; external rewards or sanctions can also change behaviour, but may produce only short-term compliance.

In groups, shared identity and valued goals can align individual effort with group norms. At work, clear attainable goals and informative feedback can support competence and performance, while choice and voice support autonomy. A controlling incentive, unfair comparison or impossible target can reduce satisfaction, cooperation or intrinsic interest.

A team could let employees choose how to meet a clear service target, provide weekly skill feedback and recognize cooperative problem-solving. Compare satisfaction, persistence and service quality before and after, rather than treating output alone as motivation; staffing, pay and workload remain alternative influences.

A reward is not the same as motivation, and higher performance does not prove greater satisfaction. Identify the need, goal or consequence, measure both behaviour and experience, test maintenance, and consider whether the strategy supports or controls the person.

Rewards can change how learning feels

Intrinsic motivation is engaging in learning because the activity is satisfying or meaningful; extrinsic motivation relies on a separate reward. Both can influence behaviour, but they do not necessarily produce the same quality or persistence of learning.

An external reward can draw attention to a task, yet it may also shift the learner’s reason from interest to payment. Whether motivation is sustained depends on autonomy, task value, feedback and whether the reward controls rather than supports choice.

In Lepper’s drawing study, children promised a certificate later spent less time drawing than children who received an unexpected reward or no reward. The result illustrates a possible overjustification effect, but the elite nursery sample limits transferability.

The finding does not mean all rewards damage learning. Check the kind of reward, when it is given, the learner’s prior interest and the outcome measured; distinguish reduced free-choice persistence from lower ability.

To support independent learning, combine a meaningful goal, bounded choice of method, appropriately difficult tasks, progress feedback and opportunities for self-monitoring; gradually remove prompts so regulation shifts toward the learner. Motivation can be assessed with self-report, choice, persistence or effort, but each measure has demand, opportunity and construct-validity limits. Converging measures are stronger than assuming high performance proves high intrinsic motivation.
