Edexcel A-Level Physics Practical Planning

Review practical planning in Edexcel A-Level Physics through apparatus choices, measurement methods, controlled variables, safety and graph-based plans.

Syllabus
Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Subsidiary/Advanced Level
Course
Physics XPH11/YPH11
Level
A2

Exam points

  • choose apparatus and measurement techniques such as calipers, metre rules or timed oscillations
  • control variables and state safety steps for circuits, capacitors, light sources or experiments
  • devise graphical plans that use collected data to test a proposed experimental relationship

6.3 - Planning question 1

[Maximum number: 4]

A student added small lead spheres to a test tube. The student placed the test tube in a small beaker of water. The test tube floated as shown.

Figure for Question 6.3 - Planning question 1 — Edexcel A-Level Physics A2

The student gave the test tube a small vertical displacement. The test tube then oscillated vertically.

Question (a)

(a)

The student measured the time period T of the oscillations using a stopwatch. She repeated the measurement of T and calculated a mean.

Question (i)

(i)

Describe two other techniques she should use to determine T.

Question (b)

(b)

The student estimated that the diameter of the test tube was approximately 2 cm .

Explain why vernier calipers are a suitable instrument to measure the diameter. Your answer should include a calculation.

6.3 - Planning question 2

[Maximum number: 1]

Two identical capacitors were connected in series and charged. They were then discharged through a resistor and ammeter.
A student investigated how the current in the resistor varied as the capacitors discharged.

State one safety precaution the student should take.
