Cultural dimensions compare patterns, not fixed national personalities
Cultural dimensions are broad constructs used to compare values and group behaviour. Individualism emphasises autonomy; collectivism gives greater weight to interdependence and group harmony, but both contain substantial within-culture variation.
A dimension can generate a hypothesis about conformity or cooperation, yet country, culture and situation are not interchangeable. Measurement equivalence, sampling balance and historical change determine how far a comparison travels.
A meta-analysis may report higher average conformity in collectivist samples, while unequal replication counts and local meanings weaken the inference. The pattern is a starting point for explanation, not a stereotype.
Collectivist does not mean automatically conformist and individualist does not mean selfish. Name the measured construct and the boundary between group average and individual behaviour.
