IB Physics SLS2.3 Concluding and evaluatingNotes

Practice Concluding

Conclusions need claim, evidence, and reasoning. The best conclusions do not overclaim beyond the uncertainty.

A conclusion should directly answer the research question.
Use processed results, not raw impressions, as evidence.
Include uncertainty or range where it affects the strength of the claim.
Compare the result or trend with the theoretical prediction or accepted value where appropriate.
State whether the data support the model, partially support it, or do not support it within uncertainty.

Repair weak conclusion statements.

Practice Evaluating

Evaluation is limitation, impact, improvement. If one of those is missing, the evaluation is weak.

A limitation is a specific weakness in the method, apparatus, data range, control, or model.
Explain how each limitation affects the result, uncertainty, validity, or reliability.
A useful improvement directly addresses the limitation.
Improvements should be realistic for the investigation context.
Prioritize limitations that have the largest impact on the conclusion.
Avoid vague improvements such as “use better equipment” unless the specific equipment and benefit are stated.

Repair weak evaluation statements.

Spot Errors

Evaluate a physics investigation and suggest improvements.

Giving improvements without explaining impact.

Review

This final skills card checks scientific judgement: what can the data support, what weakens that support, and how would the investigation improve next time?

A conclusion answers the research question using processed data and uncertainty.
Compare results with theory, expected relationships, or accepted values where appropriate.
State the strength of the claim without overreaching beyond uncertainty.
Evaluation identifies specific limitations in method, data, controls, apparatus, or model.
Each improvement should target a limitation and explain how it improves validity, reliability, precision, or accuracy.

Match each concluding/evaluating cue to its role.
